Introduction

Abstract

Prices of agricultural commodities are experiencing incredible volatility. Having boomed at record or multi-year highs in the first six months of 2008, prices of most commodities - from grains, oils and oilseeds, to coffee, cocoa and tea - experienced a sharp correction in the second half of the year.

Unpredictability has become part and parcel of the daily lives of those working for companies in the agricultural commodities sector. Those speculators and investors whose billions of dollars seemingly created a self-fulfilling commodity boom, suddenly couldn' t get out of the sector quickly enough. Financial turmoil, a lack of credit and fears of worldwide recession took over from traditional market indicators - supply and demand.

Despite worries that demand could wane as the world is heading into recession, one long-term principle remains: the world will need to produce more crops. Populous developing countries such as China and India are still likely to become richer and consume more complex foods. Some biofuel projects will inevitably fall by the wayside or be consumed by mergers, but the governmentbacked industries are still going to use an increasing volume of feedstocks. All of this will put pressure on farmers, land, fertilisers, transport and finance.

Rebounding crops across the globe over the past year have shown just how responsive agricultural markets can be to price signals. Talk of a green revolution might sound a bit far fetched, but the world is searching for a new equilibrium - and may be for some time.
