Overview
Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) systems offer the promise for low cost
applications in communications, data transmission, illumination, lighting,
imaging, sensing and light transmission. POF systems can provide the same
advantages of glass optical fibers (GOF) but at lower cost and easier use. Glass
optical fiber systems have received more attention than POF, mainly due to their
rapid acceptance in the telephone industry. Recent developments in POF
technology now make POF a contender for a large number of data and audio
applications at data rates up to 100 Mbps and distances up to 100 meters.
Plastic optical fiber systems are also finding increased applications for
sensors and lighting. The technology is also moving rapidly as evidenced by
recent papers on multimode and single mode POF, high temperature fibers,
integrated POF

recent papers on multimode and single mode POF, high temperature fibers,
integrated POF circuits, laminated lightguides, discrete components both active
and passive, optical switching, and other developments too numerous to mention.
The POF Newsletter has as its objective keeping end users, design engineers,
installers, distributors, and systems integrators up-to-date on developments in
POF technology, applications, products, standards and other aspects of plastic
optical fiber components and systems. With no other publication available today
devoted solely to plastic optical fiber technology, markets and applications,
the POF Newsletter is the publication of record for those wishing to keep up
with this fast moving field.
