DOJ Ends Inquiry Into Monsantois Glyphosate

Monsanto says the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has concluded its inquiry into possible anticompetitive conduct by Monsanto in the glyphosate industry. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsantois Roundup-brand herbicide.DOJ launched the investigation in 2003. Monsanto says it will not be required to take any actions.

Rohm and Haas Price Hike

Rohm and Haas says it will increase prices of ion exchange resins, adsorbents and catalysts by 5%, effective September 1 or as contracts permit. The company cites rising energy and raw material costs.

Nanometals Unit Starts Up

Nanomaterials firm QuantumSphere (Costa Mesa, CA) says it has opened a new and expanded facility at Costa Mesa to produce 2,500 lbs/year of nanoaluminium and nanonickel powders. QuantumSphere makes nanopowders for use in propellants, munitions and other energetic applications in the aerospace, defense, and energy markets. The expansion is expected to lead to a doubling of sales over the next nine months, says QuantumSphere CEO Kevin Maloney.

Paint Thats Meant to Peel Off

Akzo Nobel has developed a temporary paint system, dubbed Maskin, that can be peeled off after use. The product is based on waterborne technology, and can be applied to any nonporous surface, such as a vehicle body or windows, without risk of damage to the original finish, Akzo says. The product is aimed at use for protection or promotional purposes, and can be quickly and easily removed, the company says.

Brussels Calls for Global Ban on Nine More POPs

The European Commission has called for an international ban on nine persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are tightly controlled or banned in the European Union (EU). They are in addition to the 12 POPs that are banned internation- ally under the 2001 Stockholm Convention. The commission says it wants to add the nine substances to the Stockholm Convention ban and to the list of substances banned under
