Global Information would like to present a new market research report, "Custom Thermoplastic Compounding (US Market & Forecast)" by Freedonia Group.

Compounded thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are expected to be the fastest growing resin. More specifically, rapid gains in thermoplastic elastomers will be driven by the direct replacement of plastics, metals, natural rubber and synthetic rubber in a range of applications, in addition to design trends featuring soft-touch surfaces. All together, independently compounded polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, polypropylene, and engineering thermoplastics will account for 78% of all indepdently compounded thermoplastics in the year 2013. Opportunities in polypropylene will be driven by competitive pricing structure, diverse applications and manufacturing enhancements that will improve resin performance. Positive growth is predicted for engineering resins, including polycarbonate acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and nylon.

The Freedonia Group expects the construction industry to remain as the leading compounding market, followed by motor vehicles and institutional/consumer applications (e.g. sporting goods, medical products, and lawn and garden products). Advances in construction will be supported by demand for higher performance materials and rebounding construction activity.

Research and analysis by The Freedonia Group expects that the US demand for compounded resins by independents will grow at a rate of 2.9% per year to reach approximately 7.6 billion pounds in 2013. The total value of this market including fillers, additives, and other production costs will achieve $14.6 billion. Value gains will be motivated by a shift in the thermoplastic product mix towards higher performance specifications, yet restrained by moderating resin prices.
