Global Information, Inc. would like to present a new market research report, "U.S. Quick Messaging Device 2009 Vendor Analysis" by IDC.
The quick messaging device (QMD) segment in the mobile phone market posted significant gains in 2009. Vendors shipped a total of 38.2 million quick messaging devices (QMDs) into the U.S. by the end of 2009. This value reflects an astounding 198.4% increase of QMD shipments from the 12.8 million units posted in 2008. According to Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDCs Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team, "Growth in the QMD category demonstrates the desire among consumers to do more than make telephone calls on their mobile phones." The QWERTY or compressed QWERTY keyboard featured on quick messaging devices enable mobile users to type messages quickly in addition to numerous other data usage on mobile devices. "Peer-to-peer messaging has been the immediate usage case, but the addition of social networking applications and the mobile Internet has also pushed the QMD further into the spotlight," says Ramon Llamas, senior analyst at IDCs Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. Moreover, users will continue to demand more robust input methods that expand beyond basic alphanumeric keyboards. Continued growth is projected for the QMD (quick messaging device) market segment.
