Introduction

Abstract

This first report to survey the Iberian Data Centre market provides a thorough review of competitors, the challenges and opportunities ahead. The research sample is based on the results from a survey of companies across the two countries including face to face interviews to assure qualitative weight. Additionally, the research draws on telephone based interviews conducted with Data Centre operators on the most important metro markets (Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and Porto) and peripheral city markets (San Sebastian, Valencia, Vigo, Bilbao, Seville and Mallorca) in Spain and Portugal as well as interviews with industry sources.

Forecasting more than 50% growth in space for data centre facilities in both Spain and Portugal by 2010, the report identifies all Data Centre participants from the different market segments - carrier neutral, carrier based, system integrator, hosting, ISP, Consultancy and Small Data Centres - and their respective facilities, reflecting an accurate representation of these market segments.

Researched over a period of four months, this timely report assesses the business models and provides a comprehensive review of the drivers behind the sustained demand for space and managed services, including the impact of new regulation and high profile business disruptions. However, the survey warns of the imminent rise in electricity prices in Spain, which could impact data centres services in the short term as they adjust pricing and in some cases business models to accommodate the higher charges.

The research found that managed services adoption by larger enterprises is significant across the two markets. It also reveals that the SME (Small Medium size Enterprise) market, which represents the large majority of the economy, will form a new opportunity for outsourcing services by Data Centres although the adoption of new services may take longer to materialize. The report also documents the range of demand driving forces and identified opportunities for investor in the sector and new market entry.

The report also includes case studies of Spanish and Portuguese Data Centre players that can be used as a reference by a wide audience.
