Introduction

Abstract

The telecom market is at the end, not just of the big boom/bust cycle of the last four or five years, but rather at the end of a 20-year boom cycle that included the rise of the PC, LANs and the World Wide Web. Until something really big happens again-and this could be the rise of pervasive computing over the next few years-the telecom/networking industry will grow at only a slow pace. However, it will probably take a few little mini-booms and mini-busts, like the ones we have seen recently before the industry admits that we are now in a state of relative maturity.

There is still money to be made in a mature industry, of course, but profitability is to be found in cost controls and supply chain management, rather in radical new directions in product/technology platforms.
