Introduction

Abstract

The display market which recorded continuous growth was greatly damaged from 2H' 08 to 1H' 09 under the effect of the global financial crisis in 2008. The Driver IC underwent a market change in preparation for the changes in the Display market with a time difference of one month or one quarter. The radically reduced demand in Q3' 08 resulted in a large price decline from Q4' 08 to Q2' 09 and many IC makers were negatively affected by this. In particular, the actual decline in Q4' 08 was analyzed to be over 40%.

A large number of IC makers were faded out and some proceeded with M&A due to worsened IC payability which had been continuing for a long period of time. Under such effect, the competition between makers is expected to be somewhat moderated hereafter and the price declining rate is predicted to slow down accordingly.

The panel volume is somewhat decreased, but the actual resolution of each panel increases and the multi channel trend stays in the 2007 level that the IC volume increases despite the decrease in panel. The Display industry appears to have achieved a full recovery in 1H' 09 that it is expected to record overall 7.8 billion units in 2009. In addition, the overall revenue, which had continuously decreased after 2006, exhibits a moderation that it is predicted to record re-increase in the future.

Large panel ICs are expected to secure a vertical structure led by LCD makers, whereas small Driver ICs are expected to show increase in major Fab' s market control.

Regarding the volume trend by region, Taiwan and Korea have grown to a nearly equal level. On the other hand, Japan continues to record decrease in market share since 2005. Makers in other regions are primarily China based (Taiwan, China) Fabless makers that it seems Taiwan records much greater actual quantity than Korea.
