Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) was found through electrical emitting
phenomenon from organic materials in 1982 and has been rapidly developed
afterwards. Currently, it is being applied to the various fields including
mobile phone' s interior and exterior windows, car stereo, and MP3.
OLED has been mainly developed for display device until now. However, it
currently is being explored not only for displays, but for applications like
backlight unit (BLU) and general lighting.
The report assesses the current status of OLED lighting technology and offer
technical issues on efficiency improvement, low voltage operation, color
characteristics, lifetime, encapsulation and size enlarging. The report also
offers insights on the project status for facilitating OLED lighting by each
country including the U.S. and Europe as well as prototype development status
from 20 global companies and patent status of key makers.
The OLED light source is a solid lighting device. Along with the LED light
source, it is being developed as the next-generation lighting device to
replace the conventional lighting devices such as incandescent and fluorescent
lamps. In particular, the development of new lighting device proceeds due to
issues like environmental pollution and energy consumption of the conventional
gas lighting device. The OLED light source draws attention as the
next-generation lighting device to resolve these issues.
