Introduction

Abstract

The solar cell field is considered the key in the PV industry' s value chain. The global solar cell market has been led by Japanese makers who had conducted R&D activities for a long period of time and they were closely followed by German and Chinese makers. However, makers in China, Taiwan, Germany, and U.S. aggressively expanded the production facility lately to secure GW level of solar cell production capacity. The production capacities of China and Taiwan have already exceeded the one of Japan.

In terms of Korea, KPE has been the only company to produce 36MW solar cell annually. Though, Korea now secures 195MW production capacity as companies like Millinet Solar, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Shinsung Holdings, and Korea Iron & Steel entered the market in 2008. In 2009, the production capacity is projected to increase to 915MW as the conventional makers expand the facility in large scale and large corporations join the market one after another. In addition, Korea is projected to secure 1.8GW solar cell production by 2010 and 4.5GW by 2012. The solar cell is expected to rise as the next-generation new growth power industry to follow the semiconductor and display industries.

The "Korean PV Industry and Market Forecast" report, which was published recently, discusses PV industry entrants' R&D activities by PV value chain and the government' s policy to promote the industry in detail. The report offers analysis upon Korean PV makers by value chain and is expected to serve companies seeking the PV market entry in understanding the Korean PV industry.
