Introduction

In 2009, Endesa, in partnership with Enel, and Malaga Municipality launched the Smartcity Malaga Project, with the aim of using smart grid technologies to reach the EU 20-20-20 goals. The focus of this project was on optimizing existing assets, rather than replacing infrastructure using a range of "smart grid" ICT-enabled technologies. In particular, major efforts were invested into improving the visibility, control and automation of the distribution grid, laying the foundation for the integration of distributed generation and energy efficiency solutions. To ensure technology know-how and capabilities, a consortium was established, with Endesa, Enel, and several key vendors from across the technology spectrum. The project, which was scheduled to take four years, is currently in the third year, and is expected to complete the deployment of all equipment and communications technology by May 2012, leaving a year for analysis.

"This pioneering project has taken the smart grid concept beyond the smart meter, and is laying the foundations for future developments. With AMI being implemented in parallel, the stage has been set for the establishment of a truly smart city, with potential benefits for the local society and economy. Although the final results are still not in, the nature of the project has meant that lessons have been learnt throughout, serving as a guide for new projects and the final analysis will provide valuable insight," said Daniella Muallem, senior Research Analyst, IDC Energy Insights.

"The results from projects such as Smartcity Malaga will provide critical information to the utility industry and to national and international regulators to foster innovation and ultimately contribute to build but a favorable environment to achieve energy industry and society transformation," added Roberta Bigliani, head of EMEA, IDC Energy Insights.
