Introduction

Abstract

This Energy Insights report provides an analysis of the results of the annual IDC-Energy Insights Survey covering France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Analysis is focused on the utilities industry and on 132 interviews carried out between January and April 2009.

The purpose of this report is to understand current adoption, priorities and plans to adopt IT solutions (both enterprise management and line-of-business solutions) and new technologies.

This is the third report in a series of three covering the survey carried out on utilities. The first report describes survey methodology, while the second analyzes ICT budget spending distribution and patterns in evolution, channel selection, and satisfaction with primary IT suppliers among utility enterprises in Western Europe.

"ICT has a pivotal role in enabling utilities in achieving operational excellence and introducing innovation," said Roberta Bigliani, EMEA research director, Energy Insights. "This year' s survey demonstrates a shift of focus towards infrastructure enhancements. For the first time, customer care and billing are not identified as top priorities for investments, with plant and grid operations taking the lead."
