Introduction

Abstract

This Energy Insights report provides a forecast for IT spending on energy trading and risk management (ETRM) software by oil and gas companies and utilities for 2007 through 2012. IDC Energy Insights provides a overview of the current market in six regions — Asia/Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, North America, and Western Europe and a forecast from 2007 to 2012, as well as guidance for vendors serving this market.

"There are still liquidity, regulatory, and physical infrastructure challenges in most energy commodity markets — physical and financial — that must be faced to continue the growth of energy trading on the pre-2008 trajectory," says Jill Feblowitz, IDC Energy Insights analyst. "After the collapse of Enron, and slowing of the market, ETRM sales declined. However, the good news is that there are more market participants now active in the energy markets than in the post-Enron period."
