The Dominican market affected by slight slowdown

growth, albeit at a slightly slower rate than in previous years. After the
increased costs associated with higher prices for international commodities,
raw material inputs, oil and energy in 2008, producers were left with no
choice but to pass these higher costs on to the consumer at retail level. As a
result, both volume and value performance in 2009 were slightly constrained as
consumers chose to be more cautious in terms of their current spending habits
Burgeoning health and wellness trend
A major feature of 2009 was new product development by producers in light of
the profound health and wellness trend that local consumers in increasing
numbers adopted in recent years. Producers started to focus on further market
segmentation aided by the health & wellness trend which led to the
introduction of value-added products within their portfolios such as fat-free,
lactose-free, organic, sugar-free, probiotic and whole wheat variants, among
others.
Competitive mix
The local market has a healthy competitive landscape of players. As domestic
companies continue to control the market encouraged by long-standing presence
and tradition, multinational players' representation has been established
primarily through joint ventures with local distributors. Additional entry
barriers such as the small market size and high operational costs in the
country make it difficult for multinational players to establish a presence.
Therefore, the lack of investment and development limits strong positioning of
any player as the market is quite unfocused. None of the market' s leading
players exceed 10% of value share.
Further expansion of leading supermarket/hypermarket chains
Distribution is shared mainly among supermarkets/hypermarkets and independent
small grocers, with the latter appealing especially to low-income consumers.

supermarket/hypermarket chains. Jumbo, La Sirena and Ole made important
investments in infrastructure by opening new stores in low- and middle-income
