Ups and downs in the economic downturn
Whilst some categories had to come to terms with plummeting volume growth,
some categories clearly benefited from the worsening economy in the country
due to their recession-proof characteristics, and saw an increase in sales.
Value sales, however, were affected by decreasing unit prices.
The cheaper the better, and if possible, healthy
Estonian consumers were forced to learn how to save money, and were careful to
inspect, weigh, compare and judge before purchasing. As more people tightened
their purse strings, cheaper products, special offers and discounts became
significant ways to save money. Also, products with a healthier image
continued to attract health-conscious Estonians.
Domestic producers continue to be strong
Estonian consumers favour domestic products where possible, as these are
considered to be fresh, and produced taking into consideration the local
tastes. Also, multinationals held a very strong grip, and even a monopoly in
some categories, although staying behind the value sales of the domestic
companies overall. Producers also concentrated on innovations which responded
to health concerns, and convenience, and the competition continued to be
fierce.
Supermarkets/hypermarkets control distribution
As supermarkets/hypermarkets continued expanding, they left other distribution
channels further behind. In a similar way, expanding discounters also
increased their significance, whilst these developments took their toll on
independent small grocers. Consumers found it increasingly convenient to shop
at supermarkets/ hypermarkets and discounters, as the product selection in
these outlets is wider, making quality and price comparisons easier.
Stagnating and declining volume growth is forecast
Declining volume rates are predicted to take place throughout most sectors as
consumers will be limiting their purchases in the times of economic hardships.
Also, in the light of negative economic developments, normalisation and
recovery of the packaged food market can be expected to start taking effect in
a cautious manner, which will result into stagnating growth rates. Moreover,
increasingly more sectors are becoming more mature. Health concerns can only
be expected to increase in the coming years, and new launches are expected to
concentrate on convincing consumers of the benefits of the brands.
