Abstract
Takeda is a research-based pharmaceutical company that has been engaged in the
pharmaceutical industry for over 220 years. This report provides a full review
of the company's activities together with sales forecasts for key products to
2010.
Takeda reported net sales of ¥935,213 million for the nine months ended 31st
December 2005, a 7% increase over the previous year's corresponding period,
supported by higher sales of in-house ethical drugs. The impact of foreign
exchange fluctuations increased revenues by ¥8 billion. Operating income was
up by 2% to ¥346,584 million, while net income rose by 14% to ¥281,142
million. Research and development expenditure increased by 36% to ¥116,056
million.
R&D Pipeline Overview
Takeda's pipeline is largely dominated by new indications/ formulations for
its core products Actos, Takepron, Blopress and Lupron. Encouragingly for the
company many of these developments are either awaiting approval or are in late
stage Phase III trials. Takeda has also highlighted three novel candidate
drugs as future growth drivers:
- Rozerem, an in-house developed melatonin MT1/MT2 agonist, was
launched in September 2005 and is in Phase III trials in the EU and Japan for
insomnia.
- Lubiprostone has been approved for chronic idiopathic constipation
in the US, and has been filed for approval in this indication in Japan.
- Dimesna, currently in Phase III trials in the US, has been
developed by BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals and licensed to Takeda for marketing.
