Introduction

Abstract

Founded in 1949, Minnesota, US-based Medtronic has grown to become a leading developer and manufacturer of medical devices designed to diagnose, prevent and monitor chronic conditions. Beginning with the development of the heart pacemaker in the 1950s, the company has assembled a broad and diverse portfolio of progressive technology expertise both through internal development of core technologies as well as acquisitions.

Medtronic' s primary products include those used for the treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, spinal conditions and musculoskeletal trauma, urological and digestive disorders, diabetes, and ear, nose and throat conditions.

Since 2007, Medtronic has completed several strategic acquisitions that have allowed the company to develop its existing product range and introduce new technology.

These include:

  • Invatec, which will accelerate the growth of Medtronic' s CardioVascular business by adding new products for the coronary and peripheral vascular markets;
  • PreciSense, aimed at expanding Medtronic' s continuous glucose monitoring pipeline and to develop a new platform to aid development of the company' s ' closed-loop' system;
  • CoreValve, a developer of percutaneous, catheter-based transfemoral aortic valve replacement products;
  • Ventor, a development-stage company that has added two technologies to Medtronic' s transcatheter valve portfolio;
  • Ablation Frontiers, a manufacturer of radiofrequency ablation solutions for treatment of atrial fibrillation;
  • CryoCath, a developer of cryotherapy products to treat cardiac arrhythmias; and
  • Restore Medical, whose Pillar System provided Medtronic with a minimally-invasive, implantable medical device used to treat the soft palate component of sleep breathing disorders.

Medtronic does business in more than 120 countries. In fiscal 2009 (ended April 2009), the company generated sales of US$14,599 million and employed approximately 41,000 employees worldwide.
