Introduction

Abstract

US demand to exceed $8 billion in 2014

Demand for commercial refrigeration equipment in the US is forecast to rebound through 2014, growing over seven percent per year (including price increases) to exceed $8 billion. Demand in 2009 was drastically impacted by the US recession, which caused food industry participants to postpone capital improvements and expansions. Advances will result from an improving capital investment outlook as economic recovery encourages end users to renovate or expand existing facilities.

Opportunities will also result from the rising number of foodservice operators and food retailers. In addition, the average amount of floor space at food retail outlets will rise, resulting in greater sales volume and requiring for more refrigeration equipment per store. Consumer demand for a wider range of refrigerated food products will create opportunities both in the retail and foodservice markets. Advances will be strongest for commercial refrigeration equipment firms that offer energy efficient equipment because food industry operators seek out equipment that can improve their margins by lowering operating costs. The dominant aftermarket segment, which consists of repair and replacement of currently used equipment, comprises about 70 percent of demand.

Foodservice segment to remain largest market

Foodservice is expected to remain the largest market for commercial refrigeration equipment through 2014, as Americans will continue to spend nearly onehalf of their food budget outside the home. The food and beverage retail market will post gains, due to the rising number of food retailers in the US. In addition, consumers' growing appetite for a widening range of refrigerated foods will increase the amount of refrigeration equipment per store.

Shipments to lag demand as imports crowd markets

Shipments of commercial refrigeration equipment from US facilities are forecast to rise five percent annually through 2014. Advances will be limited by competition from imports both in domestic and export markets. The US has become a net importer of commercial refrigeration equipment, reflecting a trend in the broader heating, ventilating and air conditioning industry.

Press Release

Commercial Refrigeration Equipment Market Demand in US Expected to Reach $9.4 Billion in 2014

July 29th, 2010

Global Information Inc. would like to present a new market research report, "COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT (US industry forecasts for 2014 & 2019)" by The Freedonia Group.

According to a new report from The Freedonia Group, "Demand for commercial refrigeration equipment in the US is forecast to rebound through 2014, growing 7.2 percent per year (including price increases) to $9.4 billion." Due to the economic recession, food industry participants were forced to suspend capital expansions and improvements, which radically impacted US demand in 2009. Advances in this market will be driven by the recovering economy and an improving capital investment outlook. As the economic landscape starts to look more optimistic, end users will regain confidence to expand or renovate existing facilities. Additionally, as companies throughout the entire food industry seek to reduce operation expenditures, rising demand for energy efficient equipment will become the characteristic market trend.

Key findings in this report:

  • Transportation refrigeration equipment will post double-digit gains and exhibit the strongest growth.
  • Demand for ice machines and beverage refrigeration equipment will benefit from the rising number of drinking and eating facilities.
  • Energy efficient equipment for food related product categories will be remarkably strong.
  • The average amount of floor space at food retail outlets will increase, which creates potential for more refrigeration equipment per store.
  • Reflecting recovery in fixed investment levels of fleet operators, the distribution market will post strongest gains versus other segments through 2014.
