Introduction

Abstract

Focus on Distribution Channels and Standardized Services

As the customer base for broadband is serviced on a case-by-case basis and is geographically spread over a wide area, there is considerable fragmentation in service channels. This raises costs and presents coordination and logistical issues. Without a standardized product, the market will remain scattered because of thin distribution channels. Scale and coverage are needed to succeed and so partnering with regional monopolies to leverage their existing customer base and marketing campaigns can offer the best return by reducing marketing costs.

This Frost & Sullivan study explores the global market for broadband retail and wholesale services in both the business and consumer/SOHO sectors for five major geographic regions: North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Middle East and Africa.

The Push Toward "Universal Access" Will Drive Satellite Broadband

Broadband demand is determined by the degree of Internet awareness and the proliferation of broadband applications and connectivity. Many governments are worried about the lack of Internet infrastructure in certain geographic areas - rural areas of developed nations and less wealthy developing countries. To address the inequalities in access, there have been efforts to promote universal access.

"Businesses or consumer segments without broadband access will be disadvantaged in the future," says the analyst of the research. "However, success in leveraging broadband initiatives will depend on the extent to which such programs can be funded and the degree to which satellite is a cost-efficient solution in that market."

High Distribution Costs Can Restrain Initial Uptake of Satellite Broadband Services

There is a significant market for satellite broadband services worldwide. It is, however, unlikely to gain the mass market currently enjoyed by wireline broadband. This is because it by nature serves clientele that are widely dispersed, making the costs of marketing and initial distribution of products high.

Market penetration costs include customer premise equipment and installation as well as marketing and distribution costs. Professional installation also requires enormous investment for the extensive training of distributors since distribution channels are thin - though IP-based designs and alliances with established channels are viable options to address this challenge.
