Introduction

Abstract

Executive Summary

The global Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) market, valued at $640m in 2009, is forecast to grow by 8.2% annually for the next seven years to reach $1.1 billion in 2016. The growth will primarily be driven by an increasing incidence of chronic wounds, diabetes and aging population.

Globally, the US remains the largest NPWT market. The US NPWT market, valued at $380.6m in 2009, is forecast to grow by 7.7% annually for the next seven years to reach $594.6m in 2016. However, with most of the demand originating from the European economies, the center of the global NPWT market activity is due for a shift. Italy, France and Germany are forecast to grow faster than the average global NPWT market growth. Driven by an increasing diabetic population and increasing awareness of better diabetes and wound management, these countries are forecast to contribute 21% in 2016.

Kinetic Concepts and Smith & Nephew remain the leading competitors in the global NPWT market. Together, these companies accounted for 92% of the global market share in 2008. Kinetic Concepts remained the market leader with a share of 76%. However, small companies such as EnzySurge, with technologically advanced products in their pipeline portfolio, are expected to attract the most of investors' attention. The global NPWT market has witnessed intense competition which is expected to further intensify in the years ahead.

As patients, especially in the developed economies, continue to be aware of the latest technological developments, factors such as cost effectiveness and effective wound management will be driving the acceptance and market penetration of products currently in pipeline. About seven products were in different developmental stages in 2008. DermaStream CST and V.A.C Therapy (Japan) currently in development are the key products currently in pipeline.

DermaStream CST is in Phase II and V.A.C Therapy has received approval from in Japan and will be commercialized in the first half of 2010. DermaStream CST with features such as provision of continuous streaming therapy without the need for external equipment remains the most keenly watched product in pipeline. If approved, it will lead to an intensely competitive NPWT market landscape.

While the prevailing market landscape remains intensely competitive, the future could see further intensity following multiple product launches by the leading and emerging manufacturers. More than five products, currently under clinical investigations, are slated to receive regulatory agencies' marketing approval by 2015. Considering the fact that the majority of these products are technologically similar to the marketed products in terms of efficacy and safety, the existing market leaders will not face significant challenges in maintaining their market shares as majority of the pipeline products are being developed by the leading competitors.
