Introduction

Abstract

"IDC Retail Insights 2009 survey findings confirm that European retailers reckon the necessity and opportunity of continued investments in technology-enabled innovation," says Ivano Ortis, EMEA Research Director, IDC Retail Insights. "We expect that the short-term round of retail-specific applications modernization will focus on four major directions: enabling capital optimized demand management advancements, innovating the customer experience through self-service technology, migrating point of sale, and store systems towards centralized, service oriented architectures and accelerating implementation of packaged software while intensifying platforms and applications outsourcing. Although many organizations are shifting in time point of sale replacements, the quest for real-time inventory visibility, precision retailing abilities, and full business visibility across all sales channels is currently accelerating requirements around store systems centralization and service oriented store IT architectures. This report analyzes European retailers' investments directions and provides useful, up-to-date information for the major European Countries and retail size classes," Ortis added.
