Abstract
In this Health Industry Insights report, we provide an overview
of IT spending trends and forecasts in the Western European
healthcare sector. On the quantitative side, focus is on spending
in hardware, packaged software and IT services for the major
European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom)
in the 2006–2011 timeframe; IT spending is provided for two
subindustries: private healthcare providers versus public healthcare providers. This study
also provides a breakdown, only for total Western Europe, of
IT spending between hospitals (NACE classification code 85.11) and other
primary and community care providers (NACE classification code 85.12, 85.13,
85.14 and 85.3). On the qualitative side, the report analyzes
IT adoption trends in the sector and describes major drivers
and inhibitors of IT adoption.
"The Western European healthcare sector will
generate a growth of IT investment from $12 billion in
2009 to $14.4 billion in 2012. In the various recovery
plans outlined by Western European governments, the modernization and the
rationalization of the healthcare systems is seen as hub for
growth and a condition for the long term sustainability of
public health systems. IT investments are hailed as a fundamental
part of these modernization strategies: Health Industry Insights expect a
significant growth in IT spending in the coming years but
projects and implementations will be increasingly under scrutiny. Delays in
big IT projects (as for example the UK NpfIT) and
the higher attention of public opinion in public sector spending
will change the buying processes of healthcare organizations," says Silvia
Piai, Senior Research Analyst of Health Industry Insights.
