Introduction

IAL Consultants is pleased to announce the second edition of our report on the polyurethane markets in Mexico & South America. This single volume report aims to provide all the necessary data for investment and key management decision making in a succinct document.

After several years of near economic recession economists predict that Latin America's GDP will grow by 3.5% during 2004, up from 1.5% in 2003. However, the region' s demand for chemicals is expected to grow at twice that rate, according to the same experts. The projected upturn is contingent on the U.S. recovery, and does not take into account any unforeseen events involving terrorism or political turmoil.

Brazil's GDP should grow 3.5% this year, compared to 0.1% last year, whilst Mexico's economy will grow about 2.8%, up from 1.2% last year and should benefit from the projected recovery in the U.S., but the country is still struggling with the loss in recent years of jobs to China. Argentina, is still trying to pull out of the economic crisis caused its currency devaluation Economists predict Argentina will grow 4.5%, compared to 7.5% last year. Venezuela is expected to pull itself out of a nearly 10% GDP dive in 2003, and economists are predicting it will grow 7% this year.

The main drivers for this growth are expected to be:

  • Automotive OEM growth
  • Cheaper exports to North America
  • Investment from Asia keen to gain access to NAFTA region
  • Improvement in US economy in line with Presidential elections

The market data will be broken down for each of the following countries:

  • Mexico
  • Brazil
  • Argentina
  • Venezuela
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Peru
  • Rest of South America

Using the latest available information from official and industry sources the report will summarise the production of polyurethane products and the associated demand for polyurethane chemicals.

Data will be provided for the year 2003, in addition to forecasts for 2008.
