Press Release

Global Medical Devices Survey - 47% Respondents Identify Price Pressure Response as Important Business Concern in 2012

March 26th, 2012

Global Information Inc. would like to present a new market research report, "Global Medical Devices Survey 2012-2013: Market Trends, Marketing Spend and Sales Strategies in the Global Medical Devices Industry" by ICD Research.

According to survey results, 47% of respondents identify responding to pricing pressure as an important business concern in 2012. Increasing competition and volatility in exchange rates could increase pricing pressure for many companies, which in turn would negatively affect their profitability. For example, Becton, Dickinson and Company, a medical technology company which operates globally, states in its first quarter report released in February 2012: "The uncertainty in global economy and financial markets could affect our business operating cost, including product price and services as a result of pricing pressure. Furthermore, the company also states that unfavorable changes in the accessibility of government funding for healthcare and research, predominantly in regions such as the US and Western Europe, could subsequently reduce the demand for our products which in turn is expected to pose additional pricing burden."

Furthermore, survey result show that 40% of respondents identify regulatory change as one of the important business concerns in 2012. For example, the US federal health reform bill, which replaces a proportional fee on device manufacturers with a 2.3% excise tax on device sales from 2013, will have a significant impact on the industry. According to the National Medical Device Manufacturers Association, the tax is expected to generate US$20billion over ten years and will have a significant impact on patient care, innovation, and small employers. US healthcare reforms direct the medical device industry to bear a significant percentage of cost for the healthcare reforms, which accumulates pressure on the companies to find a means for reducing costs in the current operation. Citing this as the key reason, 34% of respondents identified cost containment as a leading business concern in 2012 2013.
