Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study discusses the U.S. converged mobile device (commonly referred to as the smartphone) installed base, which will reach 87.1 million in 2009 and grow at a CAGR of 34.4% and total 241.8 million in 2013. While this brings good news to the U.S. converged mobile device market, not all operating systems will enjoy similar results. This study reviews the different trajectories of each operating system and the drivers behind them.

"The U.S. mobile phone market has warmly embraced converged mobile devices," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC' s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. "Carriers have shifted their portfolios to feature more of them, and users have been eager to own them. But underlying interest is close attention to different operating systems and how they best meet the needs of enterprise users and consumers. Moreover, availability across multiple carriers will play a significant factor to different operating systems' growth. Those companies that are able to capture demand with attractive devices and compelling user experiences will be rewarded."
