Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report, IDC #J10450181) sums up important trends in the 2009 Japan software market based on IDC' s previous top 10 predictions.

"In the 2009 Japan software market, the desktop and system software segments' revenue significantly fell due to a slump in the PC and server shipments. Meanwhile, even amid the recession, there have been areas of growth such as customer relationship management (CRM) software aimed at developing and maintaining customers, virtualization software where cost reduction was clear, and business analytic software that enabled users to keep up with changes and the market' s speed. Furthermore, companies' mission-critical threshold decreased and changes are expected to be seen in software requirements to balance performance and cost. Such trends will continue in 2010. As software delivery models increasingly splinter into forms such as software integration in the form of prebuilt systems integrated vertically from business applications to infrastructure as well as proposals for short-term adoption by means of software appliances, there will be conspicuous mergers and acquisitions (M&A) among Japan software vendors. Surviving this year will greatly benefit vendors in the future," says Tomoki Akagi, group manager, Software Research, IDC Japan.
