Introduction

Abstract

This study analyzes the mobile phone vendors (including converged mobile devices) beyond the top 5 mobile phone vendors in the United States for the first three calendar quarters of 2009. The U.S. mobile phone market has been dominated by Samsung, LG Electronics, Motorola, Research In Motion, and Nokia for the first three quarters of 2009 with a collective market share of 81.6%. But what of the other nearly 20 handset companies that make up the remaining 18.4%? This study profiles each of those companies' handsets, distribution, and strategy as well as opportunities.

"The list of handset vendors outside the top 5 in the United States makes up a small portion of the overall market but offers plenty of potential to carriers and mobile phone subscribers alike," says Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC' s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. "Vendors with a focus on the hot converged mobile device (commonly referred to as smartphone) market are well positioned for expected growth, while those concentrating on entry-level devices will find a warm reception within the prepaid market space. Those companies focusing on the midrange of the market will find stiff competition from today' s market leaders. But underpinning all of these companies is a need to continuously develop their products to reflect user interest and expand distribution to include more carriers."
