Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J904010) presents an analysis of the Japan wide area Ethernet service and IP-based VPN service market trends in 2008, as well as market forecasts in 2009–2013. The main trend observed was the measures taken by communication carriers for new wide area Ethernet services between 2008 and 1H09. With NTT Communications' launch of partial bandwidth-guaranteed Ethernet access services in the market, IDC expects other carriers to follow suit.

"When considering the provision of partial bandwidth-guaranteed services, it is necessary for communication carriers to carefully consider the service conditions by identifying the needs and cost consciousness of their existing and target customers, and the impact on their revenue when these customers migrate from guaranteed to partial bandwidth-guaranteed services," analyzes Yoko Ono, senior market analyst, Communications, IDC Japan.
