Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study provides insight into the challenges and requirements for moving towards the concept of a dynamic datacenter. Specifically, the document provides insight into four key building blocks needed to build a dynamic datacenter.

IDC research has found that the top virtualization objectives for 2010 are to extend virtualization deeper into the organization and expand the use to new workloads. Server virtualization has spread quickly and is becoming a "mainstream" technology in the datacenter of many organizations. IDC believes that as the use of virtualization matures, organizations will look to gain further benefits from virtualization. Specifically, they will use virtualization across server, storage, and network resources to create dynamic resource pools, with the end goal of making their datacenters more dynamic in order to be able to quickly respond to changing business demand.

However, as organizations embark on the transformational journey of moving from a static to a dynamic datacenter, they will face several challenges. This study provides advice on how to overcome these challenges and identifies key building blocks to build a dynamic datacenter.

"IDC has identified four key building blocks for building a dynamic datacenter," said Patrik Bihammar, research manager, IDC Europe. "Organizations need to go well beyond infrastructure virtualization, to adopt advanced and proactive management and automation capabilities, and provide self-service and chargeback capabilities to enable users to request IT services and allow IT to charge for IT services on a consumption basis."
