Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study presents the results of detailed research into Western European business demographics from multiple sources, such as national statistics offices, Eurostat, the OECD, and databases such as Dun & Bradstreet.

We analyzed the SMB market structure and size across 16 Western European countries and 21 subvertical markets. Main points analyzed include the number of SMB enterprises by vertical market and performance measured by employment.

' ' The SMB segment is the backbone of the Western European economy. Its huge importance is supported by the fact that 99.8% of the region' s business enterprises are companies with 1–499 employees, which together employ as much as 70% of the total employee workforce. For IT vendors targeting this space, an understanding of the SMB market structure is therefore crucial," said Nina Bonagura, senior research analyst, IDC European Vertical Markets.
