Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study is based on the results of IDC' s European vertical markets survey, carried out in January–April 2009 in the top 5 Western European countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.) among 1,193 SMBs with 20–499 employees.

The sample, representative of the Western European SMB marketplace, was segmented into four clusters through a k-means cluster analysis, which allowed putting together companies with similar characteristics in terms of their current IT engagement and IT propensity. It was possible to study how these four clusters are distributed by company size/vertical market, and more significantly, how these clusters' behavior pattern when referring to:

  • IT sophistication
  • Decision-making process
  • Short-term evolution of IT sophistication

"The value of a cluster analysis of the SMB market is enormous as it provides an alternative to simplifying a complex scenario beyond the traditional approach based on size and vertical market," said Nina Bonagura, senior research analyst, European Vertical Markets.
