Introduction

Abstract

Total PC Monitor Market Highlights

The total PC monitor market in 1Q10 was 10,356,866 units, 6% higher than IDC' s initial forecast.

Total PC monitor shipments went up 0.8% sequentially in 1Q10, and grew 19% year over year (YoY). The China monitor market showed a healthy trend by sustaining five consecutive quarters of positive YoY growth.

  • In 1Q10, the total monitor market posted good YoY growth rates, which is mainly due to the booming consumer market. On the contrary, the commercial market decreased sequentially, with the close of year-end purchases and the spring festival holidays.
  • As the first quarter is the booming season for the consumer market, shipments of 16:9 models, including 18.5' W, 20' W, and 21.5' W models, were still on the increase. In the first quarter, 23' W monitors gained strong growth with lower prices, full high-definition (HD) functions, and larger dot pitch, which boast comfortable user experience over the entry-level 21' 5' W, full HD models. In 1Q10, 27"W continued to achieve high growth rates, with Samsung more than doubling its shipments in that segment as compared with the previous quarter.
  • More light-emitting diode (LED) models were introduced in the market in 1Q10. With the narrowing price gap between LED and cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) models, shipments of LED models are on the rise. It is expected that LED models will grow strongly in 2010 and will be mainstream in the coming two years.
  • The prices of mainstream monitors increased in the first two months of 1Q10, due to the rising prices of LCD panels and market expectations. However, prices fell back to normal levels as actual market performance was below market expectations.
