"Usage trends of collaborative and content management application and middleware show an increasing migration toward software as a service (SaaS) and application service provider (ASP), as well as utilization of open source products especially from cost-reduction perspective of mature products. Areas of growth include social software that is used for in-house collaboration and BPM for improving business efficiency. Although these are common technology and product areas that may be viewed from the results of income statements, only few user enterprises have leveraged these products actively. In order to activate the market, it is important for vendors to promote the dialogue between the user department and the IT department that is devoted to the maintenance of existing systems. More than short-term implementation, the prime challenge is to dispel the security and economic concerns of user enterprises and lay the ground for new product implementation," says Yuko Tominaga, senior market analyst, Software and Security, IDC Japan.
