This IDC study provides an overview and analysis of M&A deals in 2014 across all major sectors of the information and communication technology industry, including enterprise IT infrastructure, telecommunications, enterprise applications, IT services, semiconductors and components, and digital media.
"2014 was a banner year for tech M&A activity as several key trends have converged to push almost all indicators to post-recession - and in some cases all-time - record levels. Driven by some of the largest telecom service provider mergers in history, a series of 3rd Platform-related big-ticket transactions across various fields, and the continuous wave of divestitures, mergers, and take-private deals involving traditional IT vendors, M&A spending surged to more than $476.2 billion in 2014 - more than double the annual average in recent years. In 2015, the move to the 3rd Platform, coupled with the continuous economic recovery in the United States and the steady increase in public company valuations, will continue to drive intense M&A activity. As in 2014, we expect cloud, mobile, security, and Big Data to serve as main themes, while intelligent systems, IoT, home automation, wearable devices, and other related fields will see a pickup in deal making." - Dan Yachin, research director, IDC EMEA Emerging Technologies.
