Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study presents an overview of the worldwide market for monitors that attach to PCs. The scope of the market includes traditional CRTs and LCD flat-panel monitors. Just as economists can' t call a recession until they' re well into one, few in the PC monitor industry could have guessed that back in 2007, the market had just reached its apex.

"While we at IDC warned about overconfidence, and issues with market saturation in mature markets such as the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, it looked as if growth in developing regions such as Asia/Pacific and ROW would at least keep growth moving in the right direction. Then, like the U.S. housing bubble, the market popped, with dramatic shipment declines across all regions in 2008. By the end of that year, total shipments were off by 4.8% from 2007.
