Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study includes market forecast data and analysis on a worldwide basis for the mobile phone memory semiconductor market for 2009–2013. This document provides segmentation by mobile phone segment (entry level, midrange, high end, and smartphone) and by memory device type (NOR, NAND, MDRAM, SRAM, and PSRAM). It also provides an overview of memory trends and typical bit densities in mobile devices and discusses the trend toward semiconductor integration, which is helping to drive down costs and reduce the footprint in new phone designs. We discuss some of the major assumptions in our study that will influence revenue growth going forward.

"The mobile memory market is a notoriously volatile market, as we' ve seen recently with dramatic price swings and quickly changing supply-demand dynamics. However, we are seeing continued growth in this market, particularly with NAND and MDRAM as more mobile phone designs incorporate connectivity and multimedia functionality." — Flint Pulskamp, program manager, Wireless/Mobile Semiconductors
