Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study quantifies the U.S. MFP page volume market in detail, analyzing issues, trends, and changes in device usage. It contains IDC' s review and forecast of the U.S. MFP page volume market for 2004–2013. Installed base of MFPs, average monthly volume, average annual monthly volume, and total page volume are presented in this document. Data for 2004–2008 is actual, whereas data for 2009–2013 is projected. Key findings include:

  • IDC anticipates a small 2.6% CAGR for the total U.S. MFP page volume market for 2008–2013. However, there are pockets of opportunity within this market that show substantially higher growth potential.
  • The product segments exhibiting the strongest page growth opportunity for vendors include 21–30ppm, 31–44ppm, 70–90ppm, and 91ppm+ monochrome laser, and 11–20ppm, 31–44ppm, and 45ppm+ color laser MFP segments.

"The double-digit MFP shipment growth exhibited in the past few years has slowed significantly in the second half of 2008 and first quarter of 2009, and this will impact install base growth in 2009, which, coupled with declining AMPVs, will lead to decline in total pages in 2009 followed by a slow positive increase in total MFP page volume throughout the forecast period. This growth comes at the cost of page volume from single-function devices. IDC' s U.S. page volume MFP forecast identifies those pockets of growth providing vendors a target for R&D, marketing, and sales investment to maximize return in an increasingly competitive and difficult economy." — Jake Wang, program manager, U.S. Hardcopy Device Usage
