Introduction

Abstract

This document analyzes the Western European DSL equipment during 2008. It focuses on vendor market shares for both network equipment (e.g., DSL access multiplexer [DSLAM] and other forms of public DSL access) and customer premises equipment (CPE). Public access is defined as termination into an Internet service provider (ISP), public telephone operator (PTO), or other network service provider.

Vendors' market shares are calculated according to unit shipments and end-user revenues. In addition, vendors' shares are divided on a country-by-country basis. Furthermore, network equipment is divided by technology while CPE are separated by form factor.

"As DSL access has become a mature market in Western Europe, with decelerating subscriber growth rates, it is high time for vendors to start considering their strategic alternatives in this segment," said Jan Hein Bakkers, research manager at IDC' s European Telecommunication and Networking team.
