Introduction

Abstract

This IDC study considers the near-term outlook for growth and innovation as well as the challenges facing dedicated handheld and mobile phone gaming platforms. Hardware, software, and service factors are analyzed, and while an in-depth competitive analysis isn' t included, an assessment of where broad market dynamic appears to be leading is provided.

"While there are some intriguing regional distinctions, handheld gaming platforms continue to have a decisive edge over mobile phones in terms of total revenue generated and the quality of games," says Lewis Ward, research manager of IDC' s gaming program. "But smartphone platforms have a lot of forward momentum, so by 2011, this dynamic is poised to swing toward mobile phones in some key respects, which should have profound impacts for both market segments."
