Introduction

Abstract

This report presents analysis of technology and product trends in the FPD industry observed at SID (Society for Information Display) International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition 2008, held in Los Angeles from May 18-23, 2008. The author of this report, MIC Senior Industry Analyst David Chen, traveled to Los Angeles to attend the exhibition, and the content of the report is therefore based on primary data obtained at the exhibition. Most of the research papers at SID 2008 came from Korean companies, and Samsung and LG Display were more aggressive in displaying new panel products compared to their Taiwanese counterparts; Japanese companies presented fewer research papers and lagged behind their Korean and Taiwanese counterparts in new product displays during SID 2008. Furthermore, leading Taiwanese panel makers AUO and CMO for the first time participated in the application product exhibition at SID 2008, highlighting the fact that Taiwanese makers, aside from their strengths in current mainstream technologies, are also making progress in terms of development of advanced technologies and emerging applications.
