Introduction

Abstract

Introduction

Drug Infusion pumps are specially designed for clinical use - to infuse necessary medication to a patient' s circulatory system. Infusion pumps play a major role in intravenous therapy, and for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, asthma, cancer, and diabetes. These pumps are often used in situations where continuous monitoring and treatment by a nurse or other health staff would be expensive, impractical, or unreliable.

For neonatal patients, administering accurate drug dosage is crucial. Also, infants with incipient pulmonary and cardiac functions have limited drug tolerance levels. Thus, it is essential to use infusion pumps to prevent drug overdose. Continuous and controlled intravenous delivery of common medications, such as inotropic agents, vasodilators, aminophylline, insulin, heparin, etc., via infusion pump is the preferred mode of therapy in acute care. The use of infusion pumps is essential for drugs with short half lives, so as to maintain a desirable constant serum concentration and in situations when constant infusion of glucose is needed. Depending upon the type of usage,

Infusion pumps are divided into two broad categories, which are:

  • General Infusion pumps: They are used in hospitals, physician' s office, and clinics to administer drug dosages and fluids. Infusion pumps that fall under this category are:
    • Ambulatory infusion pumps
    • Large volume infusion pumps
    • Syringe infusion pumps
  • Specialty infusion pumps: These pumps are designed to administer a particular medication, and are generally used at homes. Infusion pumps that come under the ambit of specialty infusion pumps are:
    • Insulin infusion pumps
    • Implantable infusion pumps
