Methodology
Definitions and methodology
This report structures the telecommunications services market in three segments of activity:
- fixed telephony, which covers the operation of basic fixed-line networks
and services (installation and rental fees, communications) and fixed IP
telephony services: revenue figures include all retail income (with deduction,
in the case of Europe, of the amounts paid to mobile operators for
fixed-to-mobile calls)
- mobile services, which cover the operation of wireless communication
networks (wireless telephony and wireless messaging); revenue figures include
retail income but exclude revenue from the sale of equipment and
interconnection charges). In the case of Europe, to ensure a better basis for
comparing geographical regions, it also includes the amounts paid by fixed
operators to mobile operators for fixed-to-mobile calls
- data and Internet access services, which include the operation of
dedicated data transmission networks (including networks supporting
value-added services), leased lines, dial-up Internet access services
(including communications), broadband Internet access services (DSL, cable
modem, WLL, FFTH).
Geographical segmentation covers 5 large areas:
This report structures the telecommunications services market in three segments of activity:
- North America
- Europe (sub-divided into Western Europe and Eastern Europe)
- Asia-Pacific (sub-divided into industrialised countries and developing
countries) Latin America
