Introduction

Abstract

Report Summary

Despite a period of economic uncertainty, the level of card use for conducting financial transactions continues to rise globally. At the same time the threat of card fraud and identity theft has increased. Banks, merchants and consumers are looking at how best to address the issue of promoting card payments whilst minimising the risks. There has been a lot of activity around card acceptance and this, combined with the move from mag-stripe to EMV adoption and Chip & PIN migration places greater emphasis on EFT-POS terminals.

This report addresses such security issues, including PCI DSS and SEPA, as well as how increased card use can help drive the market through to recovery. Insight into the expanding total available market, the penetration levels of EFT-POS terminals, and enabling technologies such as ISO14443 for contactless payments is also provided. An analysis of the market structure and major players is also included to provide a top-level insight into this growing market.

Questions answered in this report include:

  • What is the total available market (TAM) for point of sale (POS) over the next five years?
  • Will the economic downturn have a sustained effect?
  • How quickly will EFT-POS terminals penetrate the TAM? Where will this occur and how will EMV adoption, chip & PIN migration and banking penetration drive this?
  • What is the attach rate for contactless readers? How will the market vary in terms of peripheral readers, modules and integrated contactless functionality?
  • Which methods of connectivity are being adopted? How is connectivity driving greater acceptance of secure card payments in some regions?
  • How will EFT-POS terminal form factors and architectures evolve over the next five years?
  • What effect will this have on the associated revenues?
  • Market share estimates and company profiles are included for the tier 1 and tier 2 EFT-POS manufacturers.

Quote from the report:

To date, much of the deployment of contactless readers has been around specific sectors, particularly those that most benefit from speed of throughput and convenience, i.e. fast food and retail outlets, vending, unattended machines (e.g. ticketing, parking, etc.). However, with more contactless cards being issued and the advent of NFC-enabled mobile phones, all of the major EFT-POS terminal manufacturers are launching integrated contactless terminals across their ranges. This includes counter-top devices, mobile devices, PIN-pads and unattended terminals. As such, the range of viable applications into which contactless terminals can be deployed is increasing and with more contactless credentials being issued, merchants' seeming reluctance to adopt contactless terminals is slowly being overcome.
