Abstract
In an increasingly competitive market for broadband technology, powerline broadband, often
referred to as Broadband Powerline (BPL), Powerline Carrier (PLC), or Powerline Telecommunications (PLT),
has emerged as a dark horse technology in a market that is becoming increasingly saturated by DSL
and cable Internet alternatives. This brief discusses the current status of powerline broadband
access relative to the rest of the market, giving and overview of potential drivers and barriers to
adoption.
For the purpose of this report only "pure" BPL systems are considered. BPL solutions
incorporating WiFi access as the consumer connection method, solutions which avoid using the MV line
for long distance data delivery, and other hybrid BPL solutions are not included. BPL home
networking statistics are also presented for all three regions.
