Abstract
The European market for spinal implants will continue to grow steadily through
2014, driven by expanding procedure volumes due to the aging population of the
region and the consequently increasing incidence of age-related spinal
pathologies, particularly degenerative disc disease. Over the forecast period,
the spinal nonfusion technology segment will exhibit the strongest growth of
the overall spinal implant market. These motion-preserving solutions will
continue to appeal to patients who suffer from chronic back or leg pain and
are unwilling to undergo a fusion procedure that may limit their range of
motion. Although reimbursement for these newer devices varies across Europe,
continued positive reimbursement decisions are anticipated as more supportive
clinical data regarding these devices are released over the forecast period.
Despite the growing popularity of nonfusion treatments, spinal fusions will
remain the procedure favored by the majority of surgeons across Europe through
2014. Spinal fusion treatments are supported by strong clinical data and
surgeon comfort in performing the procedures. In the face of growing procedure
volumes, however, cost-containment efforts by governments and hospitals across
Europe will continue to exert downward pressure on pricing, thereby limiting
revenue growth. Nonetheless, with a growing aging population supporting strong
procedural growth, the spinal implant market in Europe will grow robustly from
2009 to 2014.
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This report uses a number of methodologies to gather and present data and
analysis. At the outset, a large survey of secondary sources is conducted.
These sources act as the basis for the primary research stage, which builds
and enhances the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the early research.
Secondary sources include
- Government sources:
- Securities and Exchange Commission filings
- Food and Drug Administration and patent filings
- National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
- Agence Technique de l' Information sur l' Hospitalisation (Technical
Hospitalization Information Agency)
- Spinal implant companies:
- Annual reports, product brochures, corporate profiles, etc.
- Internal databases and reports:
- Previous reports on similar/related sources
- General Internet searches, medical literature, and newspaper/magazine
searches:
- Identifying various centers of specialization and articles that might
provide leads for primary research
The secondary research stage builds the foundation for the primary research.
The primary research methodology has four steps:
Step 1: The first step involves an impartial scan of all the
information gathered during the secondary research stage to determine its
utility based on the specific requirements of this report. Each piece of
information is either discarded or marked as high- or low-priority and then
organized appropriately as determined by the structure and sectioning of the
report.
Step 2: At this stage, early assumptions are formed as to the
implications of the information for the various spinal implant market
segments. These assumptions are then used to determine hypotheses using both
inductive and deductive approaches. On the quantitative front, these
hypotheses result in full historical and projected market data sets (market
sizes - unit sales, average selling prices [ASPs], and revenues - as well as
market shares).
Step 3: At this stage, the research is in position for its most
important primary phase - expert interviews. Throughout the secondary research
phase, industry and medical experts are identified. These experts are then
contacted by telephone and asked to participate in interviews on recent trends
and developments in the industry. Interviews are either conducted at the time
of the initial call or scheduled at the convenience of the expert. Interview
questions are tailored to the expertise of each particular interviewee,
although in most cases, the most important questions are asked of all experts.
The questions are largely based on the assumptions and hypotheses developed in
Step 2, which are then augmented, discarded, or adjusted based on the views
and positions put forth. Attempts are made, whenever possible, to cross-check
the views of various experts against each other and to reach positions of
consensus on issues and market numbers.
Step 4: The final stage of primary research involves individual and
group analysis by Millennium Research Group. All research results are assessed
and cross-checked thoroughly to determine their validity, relevance, and
weight. From this process, qualitative conclusions are reached and data points
finalized.
FORECAST METHODOLOGY
In addition to Steps 1 through 4 as outlined above, the following
“bottom-up” methodology is used to develop forecast assumptions
for the report.
A comprehensive breakdown of various spinal implant procedures/sales is
prepared using data from several sources, including professional associations,
government statistics, and private research/media sources. Industry experts
and practitioners are consulted to ensure accuracy and verify observed trends.
As a cross-check, total industry revenues available through annual reports and
other sources are compared against modeled industry revenues.
Using the best estimates of industry experts, practitioners, private
research/media sources, and inhouse experts, year-by-year growth rates and
ASPs are applied individually to each subcategory to derive forecasts. These
estimates are cross-checked by industry experts (marketing managers, product
managers, CEOs, etc.) and further refined.
Overall findings are compared against market and procedure forecasts published
by other sources to ensure reasonable estimates.

EUROPEAN INTERSPINOUS PROCESS DECOMPRESSION DEVICE MARKET WILL GROW NOMINALLY AT 1.2% OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS
September 6th, 2010
Global Information Inc. would like to present a new market research report, "European Markets for Spinal Implants 2010" by Millennium Research Group.
According to Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, although interspinous process decompression devices will continue to be used in a narrow set of indications over the next five years in Europe, the market will grow at a much lower rate than previously expected. With a compound annual growth rate of 1.2%, this is low compared to the nonfusion market as a whole which is growing on average at 10%.
A form of dynamic stabilization interspinous process decompression device procedures were the most commonly performed nonfusion surgery in Europe in 2009, accounting for nearly 40% of all spinal nonfusion procedures. Rapid adoption in the past was due in large part to the ease-of-use of the devices, resulting in surgeons implanting them for the treatment of broad indications. Surgeon use of these devices for inappropriate indications, however, resulted in many cases of device failure, which then led to a high volume of revision surgeries. As a result, reimbursement approvals for these devices are becoming stricter and are only granted when used in appropriate indications. Slowing in the number interspinous process decompression device procedures will result in decreased surgeon uptake of popular interspinous process decompression devices, including Medtronic Spinal & Biologics X-STOP and DIAM, Paradigm Spines coflex and Zimmer Spines Wallis.
This report provides critical insight into emerging trends that will fuel product adoption and the growth of the spinal fusion implant market, including traditional cervical and thoracolumbar fixation devices and interbody devices, as well as the spinal nonfusion device market, including interspinous process decompression devices, pedicle screw-based dynamic stabilization systems, cervical and lumbar artificial discs, nuclear disc prostheses, annulus repair devices and facet arthroplasty devices in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK through 2014.
