Abstract
HSDPA and EVDO networks have now been widely deployed globally. As with
initial 3G launches these networks are first being used to deliver wireless
broadband via data cards- initially targeted at the enterprise. Yet unlike
previous technologies, the technologies are providing a user experience which
lives up to the marketing. These services are mobilising workers with speedy
connection to a VPN, email, applications and the Internet. The two largest
drivers for take-up are simple and affordable pricing and ADSL-like speeds. At
this stage take-up is strongest in white- collar and SME segments, but we are
sceptical about broader take-up in the grey- or blue-collar segment unless
current prices fall. In this report, Ovum looks at operator strategies and
market trends in the delivery of 3G wireless broadband to laptops.
