Abstract
The Bulgarian telecom market generated $2.4bn in service revenue in 2008. The
economic recession impacted market growth in 2009, keeping revenue levels
stagnant. Going forward, the market is projected to grow at a 4.5% CAGR over
the next five years, exceeding $2.7bn by 2014. The main drivers will be the
expansion of the fixed broadband and mobile data segments, spurred by
increased competition thanks to a more favorable regulatory environment.
The fixed and mobile data segments will grow at CAGRs of 20.1% and 16.7%,
respectively, fueled by the increasing demand for Internet access.
Piggybacking on fixed broadband' s expansion, IPTV will be the fastest-growing
revenue stream between 2009 and 2014, with a CAGR of 62.8%, followed by fixed
VoIP at 48.3%.
Fixed-to-mobile substitution and intensified competition from VoIP
alternatives via cable, DSL and WiMAX are the main reasons behind the downward
trend in circuit-switched revenue. Similarly, as operators continue to offer
PC financing within their broadband packages, dial-up Internet will continue
to decline in favor of faster connections via DSL, cable and, increasingly,
mobile broadband. Fixed circuit-switched voice and dial-up are two subsegments
that will experience negative growth in the forecast period, showing CAGRs of
-9.5% and -36.0%, respectively.
