Abstract
The Iranian telecom market generated $9.2bn in service revenue in 2009. Its
comparatively late introduction of competition in 2006 means that the market
is still in a rapid-growth phase, with the data segment in particular (both
fixed and mobile) developing very fast in terms of number of users and amount
of use. The mobile segment generated more than two-thirds of the total revenue
in 2009, up from just over half in 2007, but the next five years will see the
previously sluggish fixed sector begin to transform, following the
introduction of new fixed technologies, a limited amount of competition and
the legalization of VoIP. However, the telecom sector is subject to
particularly close scrutiny from the Iranian government, whose unpredictable
rulings will continue to play a major role in the speed of the sector' s
development.
