Abstract
The Colombian telecom market generated $7.6bn in 2008, and we estimate it was
worth $7.0bn in 2009, an 8% decrease mainly as a consequence of the economic
recession and a negative impact of the exchange rate variation. Over the
coming years, we expect to see a slight recovery starting in 2010. The fastest
significant growth segments will be fixed VoIP, broadband Internet and mobile
data. Mobile voice, although growing slowly, will remain the main source of
revenue. Increasing competition fueled by regional operators Telefonica and
Telmex, along with relevant national players UNE and ETB, will drive the
adoption of broadband access and pay-TV as well as the migration to IP-based
services. On the other hand, both traditional fixed circuit-switched and
dial-up Internet services revenues will decline in the coming years.
