EMBEDDED INTEGRATED COMPUTER SYSTEMS (EICS) 2008 GLOBAL MARKET ANALYSIS VOLUME 02: MILITARY, AEROSPACE, AND DEFENSE APPLICATIONS published by VDC Research Group in December, 2008. This report consists of 51 Pages - 52 Exhibits and the price starts from US $ 5250.

Introduction

Abstract

VDC recently released six reports on Embedded Integrated Computer Systems (EICS), providing an in-depth investigation and analysis of the market for embedded computing systems as a complement to VDC' s board-level research program - Merchant Computer Boards for Real-Time/Embedded Applications (MCBREA).

The EICS program provides valuable vertical market-specific input from OEMs, users and/or other channels to segment the market for system-level embedded computers. The core vertical markets analyzed include: communications, military/defense/aerospace, transportation, industrial automation and control, medical, and instrumentation. In addition, VDC sizes and forecasts the EICS market; topics investigated in detail include: geographical segmentation, levels of integration/value-add offered by suppliers, most popular applications within each vertical, segmentation by architecture, and growth opportunities.

Research Highlights

VDC' s EICS research has sized both the merchant and captive segments of the embedded computing systems market for the major embedded vertical markets, as shown below for the communications EICS market. The captive market, representing systems produced in-house at OEMs for internal consumption, in most verticals represents a greater portion of the market than the merchant systems; however, in most verticals the trend is that merchant systems are increasing their share of the market at the expense of captive systems. The merchant segment for each vertical is examined in great detail within each volume of VDC' s EICS research. The reports also examine trends for both merchant and captive systems within each vertical and detail the relationship between merchant and captive systems for each vertical segment.

The communications vertical is responsible for the largest share of the total EICS market due to the large number of captive compute platforms built in-house by large Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) such as Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia-Siemens Networks and Nortel - the captive communications market is very large. The EICS communications market is followed by the military/aerospace in terms of size, which is just ahead of the Industrial Automation and Control EICS market. Both the mil/aero and industrial markets derive a much greater portion of EICS shipments from the merchant market than does the communications market, which again has a heavy concentration of captive systems.
